Gastric bypass: what does it consist of?

Gastric bypass is one of the most commonly performed bariatric surgeries, designed to support individuals in their weight loss journey. It is a key part of bariatric surgery, which aims to address obesity and related health conditions through advanced surgical techniques.

Why Choose Gastric Bypass?

In terms of effectiveness, gastric bypass surgery is a top choice for patients seeking assistance with significant weight loss. It is particularly effective in managing obesity-related conditions like type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension, and other metabolic challenges. The procedure is generally recommended for individuals with a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40, or those with a BMI over 35 who also face health issues linked to obesity.

How Does Gastric Bypass Work?

Gastric bypass surgery involves creating a small stomach pouch that is directly connected to the small intestine, bypassing the remaining portion of the stomach. This smaller pouch allows patients to feel full more quickly and limits food intake, supporting weight loss.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and requires a hospital stay of one to three days. After discharge, patients typically need about two weeks of home recovery, during which they follow a soft and liquid diet. After this period, solid foods can be gradually reintroduced.

There are two main types of gastric bypass:

  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: The most common type, involving the creation of a new stomach pouch that is connected to the small intestine.
  • Mini-Gastric Bypass: A simpler variation of the Roux-en-Y, which involves a single connection between the stomach pouch and the small intestine.

Benefits of Gastric Bypass

One of the key reasons gastric bypass is widely used in bariatric surgery is its positive outcomes, which extend beyond weight loss to improve overall health conditions.

Studies indicate that within two years of surgery, patients may lose between 50% and 70% of their excess weight. For example, a patient with 100 kg of excess weight could expect to lose between 50 kg and 70 kg over this period.

However, the benefits of gastric bypass surgery go beyond weight loss. The procedure can significantly improve quality of life by reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases, sleep apnea, and other obesity-related conditions.
