Sleeve Gastrectomy: What to Eat After Surgery

What is Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Sleeve gastrectomy is an invasive bariatric surgery aimed at reducing the size of the stomach.

As previously explained, sleeve gastrectomy involves a vertical resection of the patient’s stomach, removing a substantial portion, specifically the gastric fundus. This part of the stomach plays a key role in producing hormones that stimulate hunger. By removing it, the surgery helps reduce the patient’s sensation of hunger, supporting them in their weight-loss journey.

In addition to decreasing the drive to seek food, patients undergoing sleeve gastrectomy must follow a careful post-operative diet. This diet is essential to avoid overloading the stomach and to help it adjust to its new, smaller size.

Post-Surgery Diet Following Sleeve Gastrectomy

After sleeve gastrectomy, diet is a critical factor for the patient. The stomach needs time and the right conditions to adjust to its reduced size and recover from surgery.

One key rule is that patients should consume only liquid foods during the initial recovery phase. Meals should be divided into 6-7 smaller portions throughout the day to avoid putting excessive strain on the stomach. Protein-rich liquids are recommended to minimize muscle mass loss. Some examples of suitable foods include partially skimmed milk, low-fat yogurt without solid pieces, pureed meats/fish/fruits, and vegetable soups.

This initial phase generally lasts about a month, although exact timing should be determined in consultation with the surgeon.

In the following stage, patients can gradually introduce foods with a slightly denser consistency, such as small pasta shapes, or fish and meat (as long as they are minced and stewed).

After the second month, if deemed appropriate, the doctor or nutritionist may advise reintroducing certain solid foods. This phase is crucial, as the stomach begins adjusting to digesting solids again, such as beans and grains. Solid foods also provide a longer-lasting feeling of fullness, making it easier for patients to manage their diet.

Finally, it’s important to note that certain items should be excluded from the diet of anyone who has undergone sleeve gastrectomy. Specifically, carbonated drinks and spirits are not allowed, and sweet foods should be minimized.
